Spindle Chess Table
Submission for Design Everything‘s show “A Seat at the Table” September 2025.
36 Seats. 1 Van. Through an open call and anonymous submissions, 36 emerging designers were selected by our panel of industry experts: Vickie Hayward, Bafic, Oli Stratford, and Isabel + Helen. Each designer was asked to create a seat within the 450 × 450 × 450 mm dimensions with full creative potential.
These 36 seats will travel across London in a Luton van, activating design districts including the Shoreditch Design Triangle. At every stop, the seats will host community oriented events from panel talks to workshops and live demonstrations.
For the show Louis designed and made a side table from readymade stair spindles glued together into a solid block. half dark sapele, half light hemlock—arranged in a checkerboard pattern, this piece invites impromptu games of chess while doubling as a sculptural side table. Louis has always liked the visual marriage between stair spindles and chess pieces - the turned spindles below echo chess-piece forms, proudly supporting the game above.
Dimensions (W x D x H): 328mm x 328mm x 400mm.
